43 Light Street

I’ve been writing romantic thrillers for Harlequin Intrigue since the early 1990’s. I love writing stories about a man and a woman falling in love against a background of danger and suspense. Many of my Intrigues are in my 43 Light Street series. The building is at a (made-up) address near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. It’s an office building where many of my Light Street characters work. And I guarantee, if you move in there, someone will come at you with a knife or a gun. One thing I love about doing the series is bringing back the heroes and heroines from previous stories. If I need a doctor, a lawyer, a detective, or a space alien–I’ve got someone readers know and like. And readers can find out what’s been happening to my characters since they were first introduced. Because many of my Light Street books have paranormal elements, you’ll find those listed under “Paranormal.”

Soldier Caged

(ISBN: 0373693397, Harlequin Intrigue, July 2008)

Major Jonah Baker wakes from a nightmare to confront two sets of memories. Was he on a diplomatic mission to Thailand? Or did he participate in a village massacre in Afghanistan? And why is he being held by military guards in an underground bunker that looks like it was set up as a nuclear fallout shelter?

When Sophia Rhodes sneaks into his room, he thinks she’s come to assassinate him. But Sophia may be the key to Jonah’s salvation. They share a passionate past, and as she gets close to him, his own memories surface. But is she in the bunker to help him? Or trip him up? And how did she get there in the first place?

I got the idea for Soldier Caged when we stayed at the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. In the 50’s, the government paid for a new wing of the hotel–with a secret bunker underneath. The bunker was for members of Congress to use in case of a nuclear attack. I have no idea how they were supposed to get there, but the bunker was maintained by a government team until 1992. The team posed as the telephone and TV maintenance crew for the hotel. That was 20 percent of their job. The rest of the time, they guarded the bunker and resupplied it. Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? But it’s true, and I got to tour the bunker. Naturally, all sorts of plot ideas started running through my head, and I came up with the idea for SOLDIER CAGED. I did move the bunker, though. It’s still in West Virginia, but now the “back door” is through a huge natural cave (like some of the real caves in the area). It’s also out in the wilderness, because I didn’t want Jonah and Sophia coming out in a hotel where they could get a warm bath and a hot meal. I wanted them to be in a dangerous situation.

Spellbound

(ISBN: 978-0373228287, Harlequin Intrigue, February 2005)

Louisiana plantation owner, André Gascon, is an honorable man who finds himself in horrible circumstances because of a voodoo curse laid on his family. And only the love of a good woman can save him. Is Morgan Kirkland the right woman? Can she accept him as he is–with all his dark secrets? What will she think when he is forced to disappear into the bayou every night?

He hopes and prays she can forge a bond with him. But life has made it difficult for him to believe in fairy-tale endings.

Although Morgan has been only half alive since the death of her husband, something fundamental changes when she begins to correspond with André. She trusts him enough to come down to his estate, Belle Vista, and help him investigate a series of murders. But is she brave enough to risk her
heart with him? And is she throwing caution to the wind by trusting a man like André?

I love setting books in the Louisiana bayou country, which I visit frequently. The setting lends itself so well to dark secrets, edge-of-the-chair suspense, and simmering sensuality.
